It’s completely understandable that students get nervous before their big test day. For most students, it’s the biggest day of their lives so far and a day which they will remember for the rest of their lives.
Personally, I think, if you’re not even slightly nervous, then there’s something wrong with you.
But getting TOO nervous can cause a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety on the day of the test. And it is one of the biggest reasons, why otherwise competent drivers, end up failing their drivers test.
The problem occurs when learners become so overwhelmed with nerves, their ability to make complex planning and judgement decisions is severely compromised, leading to unsafe decisions like speeding, failing to give way and becoming distracted.
It can actually be beneficial to be a little nervous on the day as it can help sharpen their thinking and performance skills, but someone who is overly anxious, jumpy and scared will find it hard to perform at a peak level behind the wheel.
Most people will admit the thought of a test or exam can often be accompanied with negative feelings. The driving test is different to most tests because it involves a total assessment of your driving knowledge, skills and awareness. All within a Q-SAFE testing environment, accompanied by a Queensland Transport Examiner you have never met before, overseeing a Pass or Fail scenario!
This can be a very daunting position for most people to find themselves in! The added pressure of being under the supervision of a Driving Examiner, needing to listen to and follow their verbal instructions can be a challenge in itself. Coupled with the strict assessment criteria being applied to your drive while looking ahead to pick up signs, driving safely in accordance with the road rules can build a lot of pressure!
This pressure can often lead to an unnecessary fail, especially if you don’t have enough practise beforehand.
Remember, “What you tell yourself, counts”
![]()
If you focus on all the negative feelings, the things that could go wrong or even say you’re no good…you’re ultimately setting yourself up for failure. If you focus on all the positive feelings, the things you know you’re good at and can do safely & confidently and tell yourself you are in control of the outcome…you’re setting yourself up for the most epic pass ever!
Ensuring you are able to drive relatively calmly and safely, by getting your mindset right, is as important as your practical driving skills on the day. Getting this aspect of your test preparation under control is the key to success!
In your lessons with Ezyway Driving School, we will carefully guide you through the various stages you will experience on test day. We share tips, strategies and stories to help you retain the knowledge you’ve learned in your lessons. Also explaining the Examiners Role and their expectations of you, outlining how a test drive should be approached and providing a detailed insight into the Queensland Driving Test (Q-SAFE) assessment criteria. All whilst practising the common test routes, scenarios and discussing common test errors and ways to improve your result.
But most importantly, we spend a significant amount of time addressing your fears and finding a way to overcome them. Not only will you get to open up and discuss this with us in the car, allowing us to put you more at ease, but we also offer a Guided Hypnosis Recording for our students who purchase a test day package. Do you want to get an edge in your driving so that you can pass your test in a calm and confident manner? If you do then read on…
Some think Hypnosis is “hocus-pocus, stare into my eyes, you are getting sleepy, now cluck like a chicken” mumbo-jumbo. The truth is, Hypnosis goes a lot deeper than the entertainment you see by stage performers.
I’ve recently written a blog post about Hypnosis, outlining its benefits and even a case study proving it can help train the mind while you’re in a hypnotic trance, or even asleep. Click Here to read more...
Fact of the matter is, people are becoming more open to the idea of hypnosis being able to help with day to day struggles such as removing fears and phobias, bad habits and even PTSD.
Having a fear of something can be debilitating. Be it something understandably scary like snakes, spiders and heights, or something more unusual like fear of peanut butter, chewing gum, string or mirrors (yes these are legit fears)
These fears and phobias can easily be cured with guided Hypnosis, performed by certified Hypnotherapists, either face to face or with recorded audio played through headphones.
Hypnosis is a highly effective and proven technique, which allows you to gain mastery over your own body and the calming of your mind. The use of this hypnotic state, guided relaxation, intense concentration, visualisation and focused attention enables changes in perception and memory, with a major increase in response to suggestion. How can Hypnotherapy help you with your driving?
Just like any of the fears and phobias listed above, the fear of driving, also known as Vehophobia, is extremely common.
This fear can be slight enough where the driver just feels a little nervous when driving, or could be so severe that they have panic attacks at the mere thought of driving and usually avoid it at all costs.
It’s not necessarily a fear of driving itself, but the fear of being in an accident which scares people the most, and this is completely understandable.
Listening to a guided Hypnosis audio recording or even a Sleep Hypnosis recording (played whilst you’re asleep) has been proven to effectively help remove the anxiety or phobia from your subconscious mind, making it easier to face your fears without resistance.
Can Hypnosis also help you with your nerves on test day?
Quite simply….YES! The fear and anxiety which comes with test day is extremely common yet easy to manage if you have the right tools. Being nervous, is normal and understandable. But being overly anxious, panicking and potentially even crying with fear, is not going to give you a positive outcome. Having the tools to control this, is the ultimate superpower!
True Story:A hypnotherapist tells a story of her client Debbie, who suffered from panic attacks whenever her driving test came close. She had already taken her test 11 times and failed, not because she was not a competent driver, but because she panicked each time at the slightest mistake.
After her first couple of failures she began to have panic attacks several days prior to her next forthcoming test. She couldn't sleep the night before and was even physically sick on several occasion. Even though Debbie had 300 hours of driving experience behind her, she couldn’t shake the anxiety of making mistakes on her test.
After just ONE session with her Hypnotherapist, Debbie felt confident enough to say “I’ll call you to let you know I’ve passed my test” and sure enough, she did!!
By altering Debbie’s mindset and her perception of the test day, visualising her perfect drive and instilling confidence in her subconscious mind, she was able to take on her next test with determination and conviction.

Hypnosis is a highly effective and proven technique, which allows you to gain mastery over your own body and the calming of your mind. It uses the hypnotic state, which enables changes in perception and memory and a major increase in response to suggestion.
Hypnotherapy can be performed in person (face to face) or via specifically generated Hypnosis recordings which uses guided relaxation, intense concentration, visualisation and focused attention to achieve a heightened state of awareness that is sometimes called a trance. Whilst in this trance-like state, your subconscious mind absorbs the words and suggestions being said during the guided hypnosis session, which ultimately “reprograms” your way of thinking. What are the benefits of Hypnosis?Hypnosis has been proven to help people improve, manage or overcome several conditions, such as:
Here in the western world, we traditionally assume that medical intervention is the only way to treat our ailments and issues. 100 years ago, pills weren’t as readily available as a good old-fashioned home herbal remedy.
Medication deals with the symptoms, whilst hypnosis can help deal with the root cause. Hypnosis works by changing the mindset, enabling the patient to be healthier mentally, which in turn can help alleviate the symptoms.
Nowadays, more and more people are open to learning more about hypnotherapy and other holistic therapies to aid any ailments troubling them.
Is hypnotherapy dangerous?
Hypnotherapy is an extremely safe and effective procedure when performed by a qualified therapist. And it is not about mind control or brainwashing. A therapist cannot make a person do something embarrassing or something the person does not want to do.
What Is Sleep Hypnosis and how does it work?
Sleep hypnosis involves listening to verbal cues from a hypnotherapist on an audio recording that helps induce relaxation, focused attention, symptom control, and guided imagery. Someone who is being hypnotized might hear phrases such as “relax,” “deep,” “easy,” and “let go.”
These words are intended to encourage someone drift off to sleep. Once asleep, your subconscious mind absorbs all the information, suggestions and imagery, and without realising, you “reprogrammed” as such, to now believe and think in a different way.
For example, if you’re hoping to quit smoking, your hypnosis will suggest that you no longer crave cigarettes and upon awakening, you will subconsciously be less interested in smoking.
In 2012, the scientists at Northwestern University published a very interesting study. According to this study, if you’ve been learning to play a specific piece of music, hearing it again while sleeping helps you play it more accurately when you wake up.
The participants of this study learned to play two songs by pressing keys in sequence. During a nap break, one of the tunes was played on repeat when the subjects’ brains were under the influence of sleep.
When the participants woke up, not only were they better at both tunes, but the accuracy was significantly improved for the one tune they heard (without knowing) while they were asleep, indicating that the nap helped them consolidate their newfound knowledge.
The conclusions of this study indicates our brains are not only capable of hearing what’s happening while we’re asleep, but they can also memorise what they hear.
Summary
Hypnosis is a powerful scientifically proven technique to reprogram the subconscious mind to overcome fears, phobias and just about anything else that is a result of subconscious beliefs. It is completely safe, easy to do and an ideal way to increase performance in all areas of life!

You’re driving along and suddenly you notice a horse rider on the road up ahead, do you:
A: Honk at the rider to move off the road
B: Try to pat the horse on your way past
C: Assess the situation and take appropriate action to avoid or prevent risk to yourself and other road users.
SPOILER ALERT!!
The ANSWER is C: Assess the situation and take appropriate action to avoid or prevent risk to yourself and other road users.
To avoid hitting an animal, you may safely stop or drive off onto the road shoulder, and only if you have a clear view of approaching traffic, you may safely drive to the right of a dividing line, a dividing strip, over a single continuous line, over two parallel continuous lines or over a painted island.
**Any evasive action you take must be considered necessary and reasonable.**
Like any animal, horses can become jittery or easily scared by loud or sudden noises. When this occurs, the rider can signal the driver by raising a hand and pointing to the horse.
**It is extremely important that you keep an eye out for these signals and take appropriate action to avoid further aggravating the horse.**
When a rider has given the signal that their horse has become unsettled, the driver must pull over and stop, put on their hazard lights, and possibly even turn off the engine. The driver must not move until the rider has given the all clear that the noise of the motor, or the movement of the vehicle, won’t distress the horse further, then they can proceed with caution, giving at least one meter distance between them to ensure everyone’s safety.
When passing by remember to NEVER honk your horn, rev your engine or pass the horse at a high speed. Horses can be unpredictable so slow down and give them plenty of room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This meaning, the riders are subject to the same road rules that apply to other drivers. All riders must be below the 0.05 blood alcohol limit while on horseback so no horsing around on the roads!
Road accidents involving horses on the roads are rare BUT they can happen. Recent reports show a lady in the UK broke her pelvis when a speeding car hit her horse. The horse sustained minor injuries but the rider, several weeks later, is still suffering from back and hip pain.
More information on this incident can be found here.
This sign lets drivers know that horses are commonly ridden along the road.
We pass by many different road users each and everyday, this includes pedestrians, cyclists, other motorists and HORSES!
We all have the same thing on our minds, get ourselves and our loved ones home safely. So share the roads, look out for one another, be respectful and kind!
...and as for foal play, it’s a neigh from me.
